EU Entry/Exit System Launch Delayed Again

The European Union’s plan to update border checks is facing more delays. The Entry/Exit System (EES), which was supposed to start on November 10th, 2024, has been postponed.

The EU Home Commissioner, Ylva Johansson, announced that the EES, which aims to replace manual passport stamping with automated biometric checks, will not launch on November 10th as planned. No new date for the launching of both systems has been set yet and the reason for the delay is because Germany, France, and the Netherlands told the EU that their border computer systems would not be ready in time for the November deadline.

As a reminder, ETIAS and EES are designed to improve security within the Schengen space, replacing manual passport stamping with electronic registration and the acquisition of biometric data, including fingerprints and photographs, from travellers who do not need visas to enter the EU.
