The Agency for Identification Documents, Registers, and Data Exchange of Bosnia and Herzegovina organised a meeting on the topic “Introduction of Automated Border Control Systems—ABC or eGates.”. The meeting was attended by representatives of the Border Police of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Bosnia and Herzegovina Air Navigation Services Agency (BHANSA), as well as representatives of international airports in Sarajevo, Mostar, and Banja Luka.
Director Badnjević introduced the participants to this project, which involves highly developed systems that use biometric technology for the identification and verification of the identity of passengers. He clarified that by introducing these systems, we can both greatly facilitate travel for our citizens and make full use of all the functionalities of biometric travel documents that citizens of BiH possess.
All the participants supported the initiative and agreed to continue cooperation, with the common goal of implementing these advanced systems as soon as possible at all relevant border crossings and airports in the country. At the meeting, it was emphasised that the project will greatly enhance the effectiveness and security of border controls, which will raise passenger satisfaction and the overall security of the country. To guarantee the effective development and execution of the project, additional measures will include thorough planning, technical preparation, and cooperation among all participating institutions.
Through the implementation of these activities, IDDEEA BiH fulfils objectives 1 and 6 of the EU Digital Strategy, which refer to the improvement of digital infrastructure and interoperability. Furthermore, the use of new technologies in border control is an innovation that improves infrastructure and supports industrial development. These solutions modernise processes and improve border efficiency and security, contributing to the achievement of SDG 9 of the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations.
